Uganda (Photographers Without Borders)

Photos from my March 2019 trip to Jinja, Uganda on assignment for Photographers Without Borders.
The assignment was to document the work of X-SUBA Sport4Development Uganda, an NGO that gets disadvantaged children into sports and provides educational opportunities when they can't afford to go to school.

Bujagali Falls used to be one of the premier whitewater activity locations in eastern Africa. Rafting and professional kayaking brought a boom of tourism to the impoverished area. However, in 2011, a dam was constructed downstream to provide electricity to the country, and the falls were submerged. The local population is struggling to find other ways to bring tourists to the area.
The beginnings of Jinja's recycling program, this one near the site of Bujagali Falls. Recycling opportunities for the larger population are limited. In the slums, trash is just thrown on the ground with no regard to where it will end up. Some trash does find its way to a central collection area where workers separate recyclables.
One of the neighborhoods in Walukuba. The yellow jugs - old oil jugs - are used to carry water. Most houses don't have running water so they need to purchase water at nearby spiogots, where they can spend as much as a quarter of their daily earnings on water.
