The "caballitos de tortoras", or "little reed horses" were used for surfing Huanchaco's waves for close to 3,500 years, as backed up by archeological evidence. Anthropologists believe that surfing was "exported" when seafaring Peruvians landed in present-day Polynesia, evolving to the sport we know it as today. Modern surfboards were introduced to Huanchaco in the early 20th century, completing the "circle of life" for riding waves. It has now become a major part of Huanchaco's economy.
