    Programs like Otra Cosa Network's surf lessons can't exist without the support of local businesses and community partners, which help with donations of time, gear, and instructors.
    Large ditches like this have been constructed to help alleviate flooding damage, which has become more frequent and more extreme in recent years due to amplified El Niño events. They unfortunately catch a lot of garbage, which is deposited in the ocean during heavy rains. 
A period of flooding in 2017 caused immense damage and was the worst the area had seen for decades. 
The largest child sacrifice ever discovered is just a few miles from here, and scientists believe that similar weather patterns and events nearly 600 years ago led to the sacrifice.
    Children showing up early for the day's environmental lesson show some curiosity with the hydroponics garden being installed at Otra Cosa's Recreation and Education Center.
