This day's discussion during the Global GLOW program was about discrimination. The girls learned about what discrimination is, why people discriminate, and the effects of discrimination. Specific to their community, the girls learned about Afroperuanos, or Peruvians of African descent, and their contributions to the country.
Ruth, a former beneficiary of Otra Cosa Network's programs and Global GLOW, has returned to the program as a mentor. These young women can only stay in the program until they are old enough to go to college, but they may also return as mentors. Ruth's experiences in Global GLOW have inspired her to attend university where she is studying civil law with a focus on women's rights. When she was just 15 she started an initiative to get running water for her community, which only recently received electrical service. The water project made significant progress early on, and even earned her a trip to New York to discuss the project, but it is currently stalled by government politics. Ruth's goal with Global GLOW is to teach these girls to stand up for themselves until we live in a world where they no longer have to.
