Mayoral candidates paint their names on walls throughout Cerrito de la Virgen where residents will let them. These mayoral candidates, who run for office every two years, often come to the community during their campaigns. They promise many different initiatives to improve the lives of the residents. However, once elected to office, they rarely visit the community again and focus most of their efforts in the tourist areas closer to the beach.

The community of Cerrito de la Virgen is named after la Virgen del Socorro, the patron saint of fishermen. A shrine to the saint sits on top of a rocky formation near the settlement. The community is deeply religious.
