    It's not every day you see a Chimú in traditional dress carrying a caballito through town. A sight that would have been common a thousand years ago, minus the buildings, wires, and paved streets.
    The ruins of Chan Chan, which date back close to 1,500 years, are still in remarkably good condition given their age. The adobe construction has held up well in the arid environment. This is the largest mud city in the world and the largest ancient city in South America, covering 14 square miles. Unfortunately, researchers have noticed an acceleration in erosion as global weather patterns have resulted in more frequent periods of intense rainfall.
